Helnwein: Ich werde in Amerika meistens als deutscher Künstler, weniger oft als österreichischer, und manchmal auch als schweizer Künstler bezeichnet. Richtig ist, dass ich in Zürich ein Büro habe, über das ich kontaktiert werden kann – eine zweisprachige schweizer website habe ich übrigens auch.
Manche Schweizer werden sich noch an das Jeanmaire-Plakat erinnern, das ich vor langer Zeit für Urs Widmers Theaterstück „Jeanmaire – ein Stück Schweiz“ gemalt habe. Das hat damals für ein bisschen Hektik gesorgt, - Sogar der Bundesrat in Bern hat sich des Themas angenommen und sich Sorgen um mich gemacht, die Schweizer Illustrierte brachte eine Cover-story dazu, und der Fernsehpfarrer hat mir sein „Wort zum Sonntag“ gewidmet, um mir gehörig den Kopf zu waschen.
Was mir übrigens tatsächlich an der Schweiz imponiert ist, dass sie wohl das einzige Land ist, das eine wirklich demokratische Verfassung hat. Die Vorstellung, dass das Volk sogar die Armee abschaffen könnte, wenn es nur wollte ist, ist so einmalig in der ganzen Menschheitsgeschichte, dass einem ganz schwindelig werden könnte bei dem Gedanken. ...
